Europe's historical dominance in pharmaceutical research and medical advancements is facing significant challenges. While the continent led global new medicine launches in the 1990s, it ceded this position to the United States in the subsequent decade and, by 2024, also to China. Over the past two decades, the European Union has seen a substantial decrease in its share of worldwide pharmaceutical research and development investments. Concurrently, the number of clinical trials conducted within Europe has also sharply declined. This trend is particularly concerning in emerging medical fields crucial for future healthcare. Factors such as U.S. trade policies, including tariffs and Most Favoured Nation pricing, alongside China's rapid progress, highlight the urgency for Europe to address this shift in the global biomedical innovation landscape.
