The General Court of the European Union has dismissed an appeal filed by Roman Abramovich regarding the restrictive measures enacted against him after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Judges confirmed that the Council of the EU acted legally when it prolonged asset freezes and travel bans against the former Chelsea FC owner through 2025 and 2026. The court determined that the criteria used to sanction prominent business figures with ties to the Russian economy were proportionate, objective, and clearly defined. Abramovich, who possesses citizenship in Russia, Israel, and Portugal, maintains significant stakes in major industrial entities such as the mining and steel conglomerate Evraz and the metal producer Norilsk Nickel. This ruling reinforces the legal standing of the bloc's ongoing sanctions regime targeting influential individuals linked to the Russian state.
