George Gibney, a 78-year-old former swimming coach, is scheduled to receive his sentence today following his conviction for multiple sexual offenses. In July, a jury at the Central Criminal Court found him guilty of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape involving four victims. The crimes took place between 1971 and 1981 at various sports facilities in south Dublin, when the victims were minors aged between eight and 15. During the trial, the complainants provided harrowing testimony regarding the abuse they endured. While the defense noted Gibney’s health issues and his decision not to appeal the verdict, the victims highlighted the long-term trauma caused by his actions. The court previously heard victim impact statements detailing the psychological damage inflicted by the former coach, who was once a prominent figure in Irish sports.
