The Belgian city of Ghent has experienced a significant shift in dietary habits over the past decade. While only 13% of residents identified as flexitarian in 2014, that figure has surged to 83% this year. This transition is clearly visible in local institutions, where meat-free meals have become the standard. At the BS De Stadspoort primary school, students regularly consume vegetarian lunches featuring dishes like falafel and vegetable tagine without significant resistance. This initiative extends beyond schools, as meat-free menus are now routinely served in community centers, residential care facilities, and various workplace cafeterias throughout the city. The widespread adoption of these plant-based options demonstrates a successful municipal strategy to encourage healthier and more sustainable eating patterns among the general population.
