Łukasz Gibała has been elected mayor of Kraków, Poland's second-largest city, following a decisive victory over Monika Piątkowska. Piątkowska, who received the official endorsement of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, conceded the race on Sunday evening after exit polls indicated a significant lead for her opponent. Final results confirmed by early Monday morning showed Gibała capturing 62.1% of the vote compared to 37.9% for the government-backed candidate. In his victory speech, Gibała emphasized a desire for local autonomy, suggesting that residents are increasingly rejecting political narratives originating from the national capital in Warsaw. This result marks a notable electoral outcome for an independent candidate in a major Polish urban center.
