Numerous accounts on X are circulating a scam involving the late musician Glen Hansard. These posts feature a deceptive link to a fabricated Irish Independent article, which falsely reports his death and promotes a fraudulent investment scheme. The scam uses fake testimonials and doctored bank account screenshots to lure victims into investing money. Although the accounts involved were linked to Turkey and subsequently removed, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission warns that such sophisticated hoaxes are becoming increasingly common. Experts note a disturbing trend where scammers exploit the identities of deceased individuals who cannot defend themselves against these claims. Authorities advise the public to verify the legitimacy of investment firms through the Central Bank of Ireland and to exercise extreme caution regarding unsolicited financial opportunities found on social media platforms.
