The Polish government has started providing state benefits to same-sex couples who were legally married in other countries. Minister for Family, Labour and Social Policy Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk confirmed that these payments are available to those who have successfully registered their foreign marriage certificates within the Polish system. This policy shift follows a recent ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union, which mandated that Poland must acknowledge these unions. Although Polish national legislation continues to prohibit same-sex marriage domestically, the minister noted an increase in couples traveling abroad to marry in order to secure these newly recognized rights. The move marks a significant development in the legal status of LGBTQ+ families within the country, aligning domestic administrative practices with European judicial requirements regarding the recognition of marital status obtained outside of Poland.
