Granit Xhaka, the captain of the Swiss national football team, has publicly admitted to acquiring a fake COVID-19 vaccination certificate in 2022. The midfielder expressed regret for his actions, citing personal uncertainty and fear regarding the vaccine at the time. This admission follows the initiation of criminal proceedings by the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office, which is investigating a doctor suspected of issuing fraudulent medical documents. Xhaka is cooperating with the ongoing investigation and is scheduled to be questioned by authorities in October. In response to the situation, the Swiss Football Association announced that Xhaka will be absent from the upcoming training camp and the next four Nations League matches to allow the team to maintain focus. While the federation supports his decision to take responsibility, he retains the presumption of innocence as the legal inquiry continues.
