A new exhibition in Berlin explores the controversial legacy of Christoph Schlingensief, a prominent German artist known for his confrontational performance pieces. The retrospective revisits his 2006 production at the Volksbühne, which sparked significant public outrage due to its depiction of the British royal family. The play featured scenes involving the late Queen Elizabeth II performing a Nazi salute and graphic reenactments of the paparazzi pursuit that resulted in the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. While critics labeled the work as offensive, Schlingensief maintained that his artistic intent was to analyze the transformation of Diana into a contemporary cultural icon. The current showcase invites audiences to reconsider his B-movie aesthetic and his critical perspectives on media influence, colonial history, and the rise of right-wing political movements.
