Airlines and airport operators are calling on EU authorities to overhaul the Entry/Exit System (EES) following months of significant travel disruption. Industry groups ACI Europe and A4E report that passengers frequently face wait times exceeding two hours, with extreme cases reaching five hours. The organizations cite structural flaws, including insufficient staffing, technical instability, and inefficient biometric verification processes, as primary causes for the congestion. They are advocating for the elimination of redundant checks, better utilization of automated gates, and the permanent ability for national authorities to suspend the system during peak periods. While the EU Migration Commissioner maintains that member states are responsible for operational readiness, the aviation sector insists that the current framework fails to provide the promised seamless travel experience, urging immediate policy adjustments to prevent further hardship for international passengers.
