The Danish Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalisation has confirmed that a significant data leak involving the personal identification numbers of 8.8 million individuals was uncovered due to an irregular invoice. An unnamed company, which possessed legitimate access to the national registry, generated an unusually high bill that prompted an internal review of system activity. Officials noted that the sheer volume of the invoice served as the primary indicator of unauthorized or excessive data usage. Laila Reenberg, representing the Danish Agency for Social Security, stated that the specific motivations behind the illicit access to these sensitive records remain unknown. The breach affects both living citizens and deceased persons recorded in the national database. Investigations into the extent of the incident and the intentions of the parties involved are currently ongoing.
