The final season of the German television series Babylon Berlin depicts the nation's descent into the Nazi era starting in 1933. While contemporary viewers watch these historical events with the benefit of hindsight, author Klaus Brinkbäumer argues that drawing direct parallels between the current political climate and the Weimar Republic is misleading. He suggests that such comparisons are often exploited by far-right factions to manipulate public perception. Although there is a prevailing sense of unease in Germany today, the author contends that the circumstances differ significantly from the collapse of democracy witnessed in the early twentieth century. By framing modern challenges through the lens of the 1930s, critics risk falling into a rhetorical trap that distorts the reality of Germany's present-day democratic stability.
